Manatees are pretty great. They are so large and slow moving. It is amazing that these things have survived in the ocean with predators around like sharks. But no one really bothers the manatee. It is probably because they like to hang out in calm, more shallow water where sea plants grow freely. Sadly, this is the same location that their biggest enemy lives; boats. Manatees were put on the endangered list after so many were killed by boat propellers. Captiva is a big hotspot for these cool animals, with pretty much all of them living in the marina. You can see the mom in this picture has a propeller scar. I don’t think there are any that don’t have at least one. It looks like the baby has avoided them for now. Hopefully he will learn that boats = bad news. Every time I’ve been in Captiva I have learned a fun new fact about manatees. This has to be my favorite: Columbus thought the manatees were mermaids when he was crossing the ocean. Really, Columbus? I suppose that is what happens when you’re out at sea too long .
My mom and I decided to wake up for sunrise and go to the causeway that connects Sanibel and Captiva islands. This area is one of the best places in the world to find shells. I probably have about 3 shoeboxes at home of really neat shells. This time, I only picked up a handful. I guess I have gotten more selective than I was when I was 12.
I’m back! MCAT’s are over, recovering from MCAT’s is over, and now back into the swing of things. I did take pictures during my non-posting time that I will probably post later. But for now, this post.
I was out for a run the other day, (well, more like a jog, but who’s keeping track) and noticed some pretty fun things around my neighborhood. Beautiful flowers, cool house decorations, cute dogs, and this awesome tree trunk. If running with a camera weren’t so awkward and clumsy, I think that would be where the majority of my pictures would be coming from. Fortunately for me, this tree trunk is right next to my house. It is one of those things that make you smile when you see it.
